Simbang Gabi

Simbang Gabi (which is translated as “Night Mass”) is an ancient but little-known way of preparing for the coming of the Child Jesus.

Traditionally, Simbang Gabi is a series of “dawn masses” for nine consecutive days before Christmas. This tradition was introduced by
Spanish friars to allow farmers to attend mass before working in the fields at sunrise. Over the years, Filipino communities have adjusted
mass times to accommodate the needs of the members of the community who have different work schedules.

Every year, Simbang Gabi begins on December 16th and ends on December 24th with a midnight Mass called Misa de Gallo. Its liturgical significance emanates from the Season of Advent, being the time of spiritual preparation and purification to welcome and receive the Child Jesus in our midst.

Around the world, Catholic Filipinos have brought this Christmas tradition to their new homes outside the Philippines. No matter how or when this celebration takes place, Simbang Gabi provides a strong expression of the depth of Catholicism among the Filipino people. The Charlottesville Catholic Filipino Community is honored to share the
beauty of this distinct spiritual and cultural tradition with our parish communities here in Charlottesville.

Celebrate hope, gratitude and the joyful anticipation of Christ’s birth.

Experience a beautiful blend of faith, music and community that brings the true spirit of Christmas to life.
